Weekly Events
4 MINUTE READ

The Information Resource Center (IRC) hosts weekly educational and cultural programs. Programs highlight the IRC’s monthly theme, for example programs in June are focused on environmental issues as a lead up to World Environment Day and programs in July explore independence. The programs, which include the IRC’s Movie Series, State Alumni Meetings, Children’s Hour and Speaker Series, provide opportunities for Liberians to dig into American history, culture and policies.

Movie Series

On Mondays, the IRC welcomes movie lovers for American films and documentaries. The IRC’s Movie Series is open to the public and no invitations are required. Screenings begin at 1:00 p.m. and are followed by a discussion of the film.

State Alumni Meetings

Alumni of Department of State sponsored exchange programs meet the second Thursday of each month at 5:00 p.m. in the IRC. Meetings provide an opportunity for Alumni to network, learn from guest speakers and develop outreach programs. In June 2011, Alumni adopted a constitution, formalizing the group as the State Exchange Alumni of Liberia (SEAL).

Children’s Hour

The IRC conducts special programs for its youngest patrons. During Children’s Hour, American volunteers teach local children about the month’s theme through books, videos, crafts and other hands-on activities. Each month’s program varies based on the volunteer’s interests, but all programs are designed to encourage a life-long love of learning.

Speaker Series

Each month, the IRC hosts its signature event, the Speaker Series. Notable American and Liberian guests are invited to speak on topics of interest and share their expertise. Following their remarks, speakers take questions and encourage dialogue on key issues. The Speaker Series is open to the public and no invitation is required, unless otherwise noted.
