The following information regarding medical services in Liberia is provided for informational purposes only. The U.S. Embassy cannot recommend a particular physician, and assumes no responsibility for the quality of service provided by any facility or practitioner on this list. The Embassy is unable to pay for medical services for U.S. citizens in Liberia.

Generally, medical services in Liberia are extremely undeveloped. Facilities often lack basic cleanliness, diagnostic and treatment equipment, and even the most common medications. Private clinics are often operated by individuals without government licenses or even medical degrees. There is no public agency that monitors these operations.

Telephone dialing instructions: All telephone numbers provided below are local access. When calling from outside of Liberia, you must dial +231 and omit the first digit (usually a zero) from each of the numbers below.

Medical Evacuation: The cost of medical evacuation from Liberia can be prohibitive. We urge all travelers to Liberia to review their insurance needs before traveling.

Please note that the following medical services providers are found in the greater-Monrovia area. Information is not available at this time on medical facilities and providers outside of the capital.

HOSPITALS

ASPEN Medical, Corner of 16th Street and Russell Ave, Sinkor.  Provides private membership and is a Western standard primary healthcare clinic with 24/7 emergency response vehicles, an emergency room, male and female wards, an on-site pharmacy, laboratory and digital X-Ray. Cash, checks, credit cards and international wire transfers are accepted.

UNMIL “Star Base”, Bushrod Island
The United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL) operates a military hospital that is run by the Jordanian military. They MAY assist U.S. citizens in life threatening situations on a case-by-case basis. Cash payment in US Dollars will be expected at the time of service. Insurance will not be accepted or billed. Staff rotates every six months, but mobile phone contacts remain the same.

Duside Hospital, Firestone Plantation, 30 minutes from Robertsfield Airport
Established and run to serve the employees and families of the Firestone plantation. However, they will consider private cases. Cash expected at time of service. Insurance not billed or accepted. Capabilities vary based on what staff is in town at the time of the request.

This is the government-run national hospital of Liberia. There are very few specialists, mostly generalists and allied health care providers. X-rays, basic ER, basic surgical capabilities, basic laboratory services, general patient wards with basic nursing care. Cash payment required at time of service. Will not accept or bill insurance.
