Alert: U.S. Embassy Monrovia, Liberia

Location:  Liberia

Event:  The U.S. Embassy in Monrovia has no greater priority than the safety and security of U.S. citizens.  We have received requests for information regarding repatriation; our team is working to identify transportation options for U.S. citizens seeking to return to the United States.  At this time, there is no confirmed flight.

If an Embassy-chartered flight becomes available, prior to boarding, all confirmed passengers must sign a promissory note to reimburse the U.S. government for the cost of the flight at a later date.  U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents who have submitted promissory notes will be considered for future flights.  Please note that submitting a promissory note is not a guarantee of a seat.  Only passengers who receive an email confirming a seat on a flight or confirming standby status should proceed to the airport if a flight is announced.

If you are a U.S. citizen (or a lawful permanent resident who has not been out of the United States for more than year and has a valid “green card”) who is ready now to return to the United States and who has not yet provided a promissory note to the Embassy (either in person or though the online form), please click here and complete the online promissory note form. You will receive a response stating “Thanks! Your response was submitted.”  If you have provided a promissory note to us already, please do NOT resend it.

Liberia has confirmed COVID-19 within its borders.  On April 8, 2020, the President of Liberia announced a State of Emergency (SOE), including travel restrictions to help curb the spread of COVID-19.  The SOE has been updated to include all Liberian counties in the stay-at-home order.  Movement between counties is prohibited except for Montserrado County and Margibi County, which the SOE regards as a single unit.  Details and updates on the SOE and current closures are available at the Executive Mansion website.

All U.S. Citizens who are outside the United States should enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) You will receive an automated email confirming your enrollment from the STEP program.  If flights become available, the U.S. Embassy in Monrovia will contact all Americans enrolled in STEP with further information including details on costs.
